The Swiss TV Market: Is Local Diversity Falling by the Wayside?

The major telecom providers largely divide the Swiss TV market among themselves. Local providers, utilities, and cable networks are seeing their room to maneuver shrink. Why it’s still worth fighting for your own TV offering—and what it takes to do so.

The Swiss TV market is in flux: A handful of major telecom providers are capturing an ever-larger share of TV households. The remainder is split among dozens of cable network operators, utility companies, and municipalities.

The question is: Is this a trend that will continue, or are there reasons why local providers have a future in the TV market?

Triple-play Can Be a Deciding Factor in Customer Loyalty

End customers rarely choose a TV provider on its own. They choose bundles: Internet, phone service, and TV. Providers who can’t offer a complete package lose out not because of poor quality, but because of a lack of convenience. A provider that offers fast internet but has to refer customers to a third party for TV has a structural disadvantage in comparison. If the overall package is right, customers are happy to choose a regional provider—getting everything from a single source they’re familiar with.

The tough question: Can the product measure up?

Proximity, trust, and a strong local presence are genuine strengths. But they have their limits. End customers compare their TV experience to what they’re used to from the major platforms: modern apps on all devices, on-demand viewing, intuitive controls, and fast updates. On the other hand, anyone offering a technically outdated solution will gradually lose their customers’ trust, no matter how good the personal service is.

This means that local providers must offer a TV product that is on par with those of national providers in terms of both functionality and visual appeal. For a long time, this was a matter of budget. Today, it is primarily a matter of choosing the right partners.

Local sourcing still offers added value

Local utility companies and cable networks have something that large telecommunications providers cannot offer: proximity, personal contact, a strong local presence, and short lines of communication. In many communities, the local provider is part of the infrastructure—not just another interchangeable service provider.

This relationship has real value. But it isn't enough on its own if the product offering doesn't measure up. End customers remain loyal as long as the alternative isn't significantly better. A modern, well-functioning TV service under the company's own brand can fill the very gap that would otherwise prompt customers to switch.

The hurdle isn't the technology—it's getting started

For a long time, launching a proprietary TV service was only feasible with substantial investments and large minimum purchase commitments. This kept many smaller providers out of the market or forced them into dependencies that were economically unsustainable.

Today, there are alternatives. White-label models make it possible to offer a professional TV product under your own brand without having to operate the entire technical infrastructure yourself. The barriers to entry have dropped significantly, and scalability adapts to actual customer numbers.

Diversity is not a luxury—it is what drives us

Switzerland thrives on diversity—in its energy supply, its political structure, and its business sector. There are good reasons why this should remain the case in the telecommunications market as well. End customers benefit from choice, local roots, and providers who know their region.

That’s exactly why, at Netstream , we’re building our TV platform to be accessible and economically viable even for smaller providers. We’re convinced that a professional TV offering shouldn’t depend on the size of a company. And we consistently stay in the background: your brand, your customers, your offering.
