The stone that could decide the unequal battle for market share between hyperscalers and regional Cloud providers in Switzerland.
Who hasn't heard of them: the three hyperscalers and Cloudgiants Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, who together control more than half the market. Given this dominance, is it even worth considering regional Cloud providers when choosing a Cloudprovider?
The Swissness factor
The data location in Switzerland, with its associated security aspects, remains a crucial criterion for selecting a suitable Cloudprovider. Additionally, several regulated sectors, such as finance, healthcare, and the public sector, are subject to legal data protection regulations and are therefore required to store their data in Switzerland. Furthermore, the geographical proximity to the data center has a positive impact on latency.
Thanks to its advanced infrastructure, high security standards and good reputation, as well as its stable politicalagand economy, Switzerland is also internationally regarded as a safe "data haven".
Goliath is arming itself
To meet the increasingagfor data centers in Switzerland, hyperscalers are now also offering their own data centers there. Swiss Cloud providers have little to offer in response to their virtually limitless scalability, vast portfolios, and now, data storage in Switzerland. However, it's worth taking a closer look and finding the stone that will ultimately defeat Goliath.
David's Stones
The much-discussed CLOUD Act (Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act) also applies to services offered by American hyperscalers that store data in Switzerland. This law obligates American IT service providers to grant US authorities access to stored data, even if the data is not stored in the USA. By choosing a provider with its headquarters andag in Switzerland, you largely avoid this problem.
Hyperscalers typically offer services exclusively through a self-service portal without direct contact. Dedicated personal contacts or customized solutions are generally not available. Language barriers when communicating with international support can also lead to misunderstandings. A regional provider can offer optimal support in this area and is committed to maintaining a strong partnership.
Unlike large corporations, medium-sized regional Cloud providers have a greater interest in project-based business. Solutions, prices, and SLAs can be negotiated individually – for greater flexibility, transparency, and trust on both sides.
